The Dakota or The Dakota Apartament is the oldest building in the Upper West Side Manhattan, currently running as a private residence Cooperative, and it's considered to be the oldest luxury apartment building in NYC.

Singer Sewing Machine Company co-founder Edward Clark commissioned The Dakot as a $1 million apartment builiding for 60 families, incluiding his own. Clark, however died in 1882 and the construction finished in October 1884.

There is not an exact date of when the construction started, but is estimated between October 25, 1880 and completed on October 27, 1884. Design by Henry J. Hardenberg. (Same firm that designed the Plaza Hotel on Central Park South and 59th St) The Dakota was designated a New York City Landmark in 1969 and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
Yoko Ono and John Lennon moved in The Dakota in 1973. On 8th December 1980, Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman in the archway of the Dakota. Lennon signed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman several hours before the murder.

Notable residents: Author Harlan Cohen, U2’s Bono, Rex Reed, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Jack Palance, Lillian Gish, Leonard Berstein, Boris Karloff.

Notable celebrities who have been rejected by the Co-op: Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Cher, Billy Joel, Madonna, Carly Simon, Alex Rodriguez, Judd Apatow, and Tea Leoni.
